How to install XAMPP on Linux Mint 19 or Ubuntu

This blog describes each steps about how to install XAMPP on Linux mint 19 or Ubuntu and thus all you have to do is follow the steps.

About local web server

If you are going to be a web developer then the fist thing you should know that what is local server(s) and how to install it on your Window, Linux or Mac OS. Local server is software that configures a web server on your local system. Its file is stored locally in your PC so you can update or test your website as many times as you want.. It is very useful during development phase to rectify errors easily before deployment on production server or publishing.

Many servers are available but the major difference among them is its programming language and OS. For example if you want to develop c#.net website then you should use IIS server which is available on windows oprating system and if you want to develop PHP website then you should use XAMPP, WAMP, LAMP or MAMP.

Difference between XAMPP, WAMPP, LAMP or MAMP

Difference between them is its platform (OS):

  • XAMPP is available for all OS (X-OS) which can install Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl on your system.
  • WAMP is available for windows
  • LAMP is available for Linux, and
  • MAMP is available for Mac OS X

Install XAMPP on Linux mint 19 or Ubuntu

Step 1: First of all you should download software and for doing so you have to Go to apachefriends official website and download XAMPP according to your operating system.

Step 2: When download get completed press Ctrl + Alt + T to open terminal or command prompt.

Step 3: Go to Download folder where you downloaded XAMPP. Use cd command to change directory. Like
cd Downloads (press enter key)
Note: be sure the spelling of downloads and its case sensetivity. You can use ls to list your directories before cd command.

Step 4: Now make the downloaded file execulable by using “chmod” command.

chmod +x xampp-linux-x64-7.2.27-0-installer.run
or,
sudo chmod +x xampp-linux-x64-7.2.27-0-installer.run

make file execulable

Note: use ls command to view downloaded file name.

Step 5: Execute the downloaded file by using sudo command.

sudo ./xampp-linux-x64-7.2.27-0-installer.run

Note: enter your login user’s password to execute this file.

Step 6: Follow the installation window instructions, and press next 5 times to begin installation as shown in images:

you can uncheck “Learn more about Bitnami for XAMPP” (optional – will open an official web page).

Step 7: When installation get completed don’t click on “Finish” until you uncheck the “Launch XAMPP” check box. Because installation process isn’t completed yet.

Step 8: Now go to your installation direrectory (it will be /opt/lampp ) by using cd command.

cd /opt/lampp

Step 8: Execute the “manager-linux-x64.run” file by using “Sudo” command as follows:

sudo ./manager-linux-x64.run

Note: you can use ls command to show the list of file name.

Step 9: Click on Start All/ Stop All to start or stop apache server on your local system.

Now the installation of XAMPP on Linux Mint or Ubuntu get completed and You can run your local server any time when you needed.

Easy way to Start or Stop Apache server (XAMPP / LAMPP)

-> To Start Server:

sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start

-> To Stop Server:

sudo /opt/lampp/lampp stop

-> To Restart Server:

sudo /opt/lampp/lampp restart
